John 4:1-30 King James Version (KJV)
Jesus (Yeshua) and the Samaritan Woman
4 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus (Yeshua) made and baptized more disciples than John,
2 (Though Jesus (Yeshua) himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
3 He left Judaea (Judea), and departed again into Galilee.
4 And he must needs (He needed to) go through Samaria.
5 Then cometh he (He came) to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus (Yeshua) therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour (noon).
7 There cometh (came) a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto (Yeshua said to) her, Give me (Me) to drink.
8 (For his (His) disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
9 Then saith (said) the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou (You), being a Jew, askest drink of me (asked water from me), which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
10 Jesus (Yeshua) answered and said unto her, If thou knewest (you knew) the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee (said to you), Give me to drink; thou wouldest (you would) have asked of him, and he would have given thee (you) living water.
11 The woman saith unto him (said to Him), Sir, thou hast (you have) nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou (from where then do you have) that living water?
12 Art thou (Are you) greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus (Yeshua) answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh (drinks) of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh (drinks) of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
15 The woman saith unto him (said to Him), Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither (here) to draw.
16 Jesus saith unto (Yeshua said to) her, Go, call thy (your) husband, and come hither (here).
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus (Yeshua) said unto her, Thou hast well said (You have said well), I have no husband:
18 For thou hast (you have) had five husbands; and he whom thou (you) now hast (have) is not thy (your) husband: in that saidst thou truly (in that you said truly).
19 The woman saith unto him (said to Him), Sir, I perceive that thou art (You are) a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye (you) say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus saith unto (Yeshua said to) her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh (comes), when ye (you) shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye (You) worship ye (you) know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh (comes), and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh (seeks) such to worship him (Him).
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him (Him) must worship him (Him) in spirit and in truth.
25 The woman saith unto (said to) him, I know that Messias cometh (the Messiah is coming), which is called Christ: when he is come (when He comes), he (He) will tell us all things.
26 Jesus saith unto (Yeshua said to) her, I that speak unto thee (to you) am he (He).
27 And upon this came his (His) disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou (What are you looking for)? or, Why talkest thou with her (Why are you talking to her)?
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith (said) to the men,
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him (Him).
2) O = OBSERVATION – Explain what is your observation for instructions and understand what God is telling us to do in the verse or passage.
# MY OBSERVATION:-
2.1) This Samaritan woman has had 5 husbands. The man she is with now is not her husband. She was thirsty for love.
As we know that God sent His only begotten Son Jesus Christ (original name in Hebrew: Yeshua Hamashiach) to show us that GOD IS LOVE (John 3:16) and that He loves us so much yet sometimes some of us are still hungry for love.
Here are some common questions that many normally ask:-
I am so lonely. Is there anyone out there for me?
I can’t find true love. All the men or women I met always hurt me in the end. Why?
What wrong did I do to deserve all this hurt?
Am I so ugly? Nobody loves me. Nobody appreciates me.
2.2) We cannot deny that all of us have the desire to be belonging to someone or a group of people. We all like to feel being cared for, noticed and appreciated. It is a never ending love seeking process throughout our lives. What if we tell you that true love do exist? Above is a true story from the Bible of how a Samaritan woman whom Jesus (Yeshua) met in a town called Sychar in Samaria. Jesus (Yeshua) explained to her what God’s true love is all about in verse 10:-
John 4:10 King James Version (KJV)
10 Jesus (Yeshua) answered and said unto her, If thou knewest (you knew) the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee (said to you), Give me to drink; thou wouldest (you would) have asked of him (Him), and he (He) would have given thee (you) living water.
We also read that Jesus (Yeshua) had a brief chat with this Samaritan woman at the well. During the brief chat, Jesus (Yeshua) pointed out to her regarding her relationships status and He knew that she was thirsty for love.
Therefore Jesus (Yeshua) spoke metaphorically (a figure of speech that refers to one thing in terms of another, suggesting a resemblance between the two scenarios) to diagnose (to determine the identity of (a disease, illness, etc.) her heart’s condition.
He was explaining to her that if she accepts God’s love, she will never feel ’empty inside’ (with no love and no purpose in life) again:-
John 4:14 King James Version (KJV)
14 But whosoever drinketh (drinks) of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
2.3) QUESTION: Are we like the Samaritan woman at the well? Do we ‘thirst’ for love? Do we keep looking for love at all the wrong places like the Samaritan woman? Do we even know how much does God love us? If our parents on this earth can love us so very much, imagine how much more does our heavenly Father who created us in His image with His own hands loves us. Truly there is no one out there who can love us like our heavenly Abba Father. He said to us that He will take care of our needs if we first seek Him.
Even after Adam and Eve fell which caused mankind to be in a sinful nature and condemned to hell, God took a big step to save our souls from going to hell. The big step was that He sent His only son Jesus (Yeshua) to us so we can have a way to return to Him. For only when we believe and confess that Jesus (Yeshua) is the Son of God and accept Him as our personal Lord and Savior, we will be saved from condemnation.
In John 3:16-17, Jesus (Yeshua) showed the Samaritan woman that He knew that she was thirsty for love as she had too hard to look for love from many men:-
John 3:16-19 King James Version (KJV)
16 Jesus saith unto (Yeshua said to) her, Go, call thy (your) husband, and come hither (here).
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus (Yeshua) said unto her, Thou hast well said (You have said well), I have no husband:
18 For thou hast (you have) had five husbands; and he whom thou (you) now hast (have) is not thy (your) husband: in that saidst thou truly (in that you said truly).
19 The woman saith unto (said to) him, Sir, I perceive that thou art (you are) a prophet.
Likewise, God knows our thirst for love
2.4) If you are looking for that special someone who truly loves you, look no more. Jesus (Yeshua) is standing outside your door, knocking and knocking. He wants to give you this living water (as in verse 10) so you will thirst no more. Only God can quench this thirst with His Spirit. Will you open the door for Him? Will you give Him a chance to love you and to show you what true love is? He chose to sacrifice His life so that you can be set free from your sins because He loves you so much. Will you say yes to Him and accept God’s love?
Jesus (Yeshua) said that He is the ONLY way to God. He is also the truth and the life:-
John 14:6 King James Version (KJV)
6 Jesus saith unto (Yeshua said to) him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Jesus (Yeshua) also said that He wanted to give rest to our souls:-
Matthew 11:28-30 King James Version (KJV)
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
2.5) There is one more point which is very important. Please remember that is ok to be single.
Although in the beginning in the book of Genesis, God said that it is not good for man to be alone as Adam was the first human on Earth and he was all alone. So God made a helper (Eve) suitable for Adam. God designed marriage. The marriage between Adam and Eve was also God’s plan for them to populate the Earth.
However, in the New Testament, Jesus (Yeshua) explained that it is alright to chose to be single to do God’s will (Matthew 19:12). It is not a sin to be single:-
Matthew 19:11-12 King James Version (KJV)
12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.
And Apostle Paul taught the advantages of being single because those who are not married will be able to concentrate better when serving God without the need to take care of their spouses:-
1 Corinthians 7:32-35 King James Version (KJV)
32 But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth (cares) for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
33 But he that is married careth (cares) for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.
34 There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth (cares) for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth (cares) for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
35 And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare (trap) upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye (you) may attend upon the Lord without distraction.
Therefore being single to serve God has its own advantages.
2.6) What is the ‘living water” in John 4:10?
Let us read John 4:13-14 again:-
10 Jesus (Yeshua) answered and said unto her, If thou knewest (you knew) the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee (said to you), Give me to drink; thou wouldest (you would) have asked of him, and he would have given thee (you) living water.
In John 4:13-14, Jesus (Yeshua) explained that this water is a spring of water that leads to eternal life.
In John 7:37-39, the ‘Living Water’ represents the Spirit. Jesus (Yeshua) was not talking about the physical water:-
John 7:37-39 King James Version (KJV)
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus (Yeshua) stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit) was not yet given; because that Jesus (Yeshua) was not yet glorified.)
3) A = APPLICATION – Explain how this scripture can be applied in our lives.
We accept God’s steadfast love, peace and joy to ‘thirst no more’.
God loves you more than you’ll ever know. Jesus (Yeshua) even died on the cross for us just so we can be redeemed from our sins and have eternal life. There will be no more tears and pain in eternal life for those who believe and confess that Jesus (Yeshua) is Lord and that God raised Him from the dead.
Isaiah 43:4 King James Version (KJV)
Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee.
Therefore, NEVER LET SATAN or ANYONE tell or treat you otherwise!
Wow! Isn’t that wonderful? Imagine us having the steadfast eternal love from our heavenly Father without having to pay any payment!
4) P = PRAYER – Pray (speak to Abba Father) accordingly to the scripture and ask Him to show us how we can apply the scripture in our lives.
~ bows head in prayer ~
Amen
